Born in Llanbedrog, on the Llŷn Pennisula, I graduated from the Painting and Printmaking department of The Glasgow School of Art in June 2015.
My artistic practice explores the themes of language, translation and perpetual transformation within the storytelling tradition of Wales. I am fascinated by the evolution of the ancient tales of the Mabinogion, from their fluid oral and performative origins to a fixed written manuscript, eventually leading to illustrations of the tales told in their own unique visual language. Raised as a fluent trilingual, I am interested in distortions and transformations when moving from one media or language to another. To create my prints, I take my own interpretation of events from the tales through a chain of processes (woodcut, screen print, sculpture, photography, etching and embossing). Each stage within the process acts as a translation of the stage which preceded it- mirroring the transformation of the original tales through their various interpretations. The focus is on the ever-changing craft of the storyteller whatever the medium. Knowledge of the original tales is not essential; the intention is that the viewer creates his own narrative through the interpretation of the series of dots, lines and dashes which form the language of printmaking. |

Wrth wraidd fy ngwaith mae datblygiad y traddodiad chwedlonol yng Nghymru a’r ffordd y mae’n fythol newid. Cafodd y straeon eu perfformio a’u hadrodd ar lafar am ganrifoedd cyn cael eu cofnodi ar bapur, ac yna eu dehongli ymhellach drwy addasiadau, cyfieithiadau a darluniau. Wedi fy magu yn rhugl dairieithog, rwyf â diddordeb mewn datblygiadau a gwyrdroadau wrth symud o un cyfrwng neu iaith i’r llall. Er mwyn creu fy mhrintiau rhof fy nehongliad o bytiau o straeon drwy gadwyn o brosesau (torlunio pren, argraffu sgrin, creu modelau, ffotograffiaeth, ysgythru a boglynwaith). Mae pob cam yn y broses hon yn adlewyrchu trawsnewidiadau o fewn y chwedlau gwreiddiol. Y canolbwynt yw crefft y storiwr beth bynnag yw ei gyfrwng. Nid oes rhaid adnabod y straeon, gan mai’r bwriad yw caniatau i’r sawl sy’n edrych ar y gwaith greu ei naratif ei hun trwy ei ddehongliad o’r cyfresi o ddotiau a llinellau sy’n ffurfio iaith printio. |
